History of Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple

Thiruparankundram is one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan (Arupadai Veedu) and is among the oldest rock-cut temples in Tamil Nadu. Located about 8 km southwest of Madurai, it is revered as the place where Lord Murugan married Deivanai, the daughter of Lord Indra, after his victory over the demon Surapadman.

The temple hill (Parankundram Hill) is believed to be over 2000 years old, mentioned in ancient Tamil Sangam literature, including works like Silappathikaram and Tirumurugatrupadai.
